So whilst on the surface London seems to be mostly concrete, over the last two years I have discovered some really lovely walks that show a totally different side to this city. These walks are nestled in the heart of the city and can be accessed by the underground / overground. Here are my favourite walks.
The Parkland Walk: A Hidden Gem in North London
Uncover a hidden gem in North London, the Parkland Walk, a disused railway line transformed into a scenic walking trail. This urban oasis meanders through lush greenery, offering glimpses of Victorian-era architecture and remnants of the railway’s past. As you stroll along this tranquil path, you’ll encounter local wildlife, charming cafes, and vibrant street art, adding a touch of urban charm to your walk.
The Thames Path: A Riverside Stroll Through History
Embark on a captivating journey along the iconic Thames Path, a scenic trail tracing the course of the River Thames. This historic route meanders past architectural marvels like the Tower of London and the Houses of Parliament, offering glimpses into London’s rich past. As you stroll along the riverbanks, you’ll encounter vibrant markets, charming pubs, and picturesque bridges, each whispering tales of the city’s storied heritage.
Stretching from the River Thames to Nunhead Cemetery, the Green Chain Walk spans fields, parks and woodlands across 50 miles (82km), split into 11 easy-to-follow sections. This extensive trail offers a diverse range of landscapes, from ancient woodlands to panoramic viewpoints, showcasing the natural beauty of the region. It’s a great way to experience a less-visited side of London – most Londoners won’t know about it!
Venture north to Hampstead Heath, a sprawling expanse of heathland offering a refreshing escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Explore its ancient woodlands, discover hidden ponds, and revel in the tranquility of this natural haven. Climb Parliament Hill for sweeping views of London’s skyline, or take a refreshing dip in one of the park’s swimming ponds.
The Jubilee Greenway: A Celebration of London’s Green Spaces
Embark on a journey through London’s green heart along the Jubilee Greenway, a network of walking and cycling paths celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. This route connects iconic landmarks, tranquil parks, and vibrant neighbourhoods, showcasing the city’s diverse landscapes. As you explore this green corridor, you’ll discover hidden gems, charming cafes, and picturesque canals, offering a unique perspective on London’s urban tapestry.
