My favourite African restaurants in London

So over the past few years, I have had the opportunity of visiting different countries in Africa and lived in a neighbourhood of London where there were plenty of Ethiopian restaurants to choose from. I have fallen in love with the complexity of flavours, the communal eating and friendly atmosphere (especially across the family run joints). As such, I wanted to share with my readers, my favourite places that I have discovered so far.

Merkato Restaurant (North London): Located in the heart of London, Merkato Restaurant provides an authentic Ethiopian dining experience. Their menu boasts a wide array of traditional dishes, from hearty stews to flavorful vegetarian options. The warm and inviting atmosphere, coupled with friendly service, makes Merkato a perfect spot for both casual meals and special occasions.

Yeshi Ethiopian Cuisine (North London): Tucked away in a quiet corner of the city, Yeshi Ethiopian Cuisine is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. This family-run restaurant prides itself on using fresh ingredients and traditional recipes passed down through generations. Their menu showcases the diversity of Ethiopian cuisine, with options ranging from spicy meat dishes to flavorful vegetarian platters.

Chishuru (Central London) from the brilliant mind of Adejoké Bakare, has quickly become a firm favourite. It’s more than just a restaurant; it’s a celebration of West African culinary heritage. The menu is a beautifully curated exploration of dishes from across the region, showcasing the diversity and complexity of the cuisine.

Akoko (Central London): This restaurant takes West African cuisine to a whole new level. This Michelin-starred restaurant offers a refined dining experience, showcasing the elegance and sophistication of the region’s culinary traditions. Chef Ayo Adebiyi’s tasting menu is a masterclass in culinary artistry, with each dish beautifully presented and packed with flavour. Akoko is a testament to the versatility of West African ingredients and the creativity of modern chefs. It’s a truly special place for a memorable dining experience.

Chuku’s (North London): For a more casual and social dining experience, Chuku’s is a must-visit. This Nigerian tapas restaurant offers a fun and interactive way to explore the flavours of Nigeria. Their small plates are perfect for sharing, allowing you to sample a variety of dishes. The atmosphere is lively and buzzing, with great music and friendly staff. It’s the ideal spot for a night out with friends or a first date, where you can enjoy delicious food, good company, and a taste of Nigerian hospitality.

Pitanga (West London): So I hear this is Idris Elba’s favourite restaurant. It draws on their Anglo-Nigerian roots, offering West African favourites such as Suya, Kosai (Akara) and Jollof Rice.
