Top tips for living in London as a student

Navigating the capital as a student can feel like a financial tightrope walk, but fear not! With a bit of savvy planning and these insider tips, you can conquer London without emptying your bank account. I have experienced being a student both in my 20s and 30s and know what it feels like to trying to save money whilst also living in one of the most expensive places in the world. Here are my top 5 tips.

  • Olio App: This app connects you with neighbours and local businesses giving away surplus food, furniture and books. Score free groceries, pantry staples, and even the occasional home-cooked or restaurant cooked meal! It is honestly such a great app and I have used it to get some amazing furniture for my apartment.
  • Too Good To Go: This app lets you buy leftover food from restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets at heavily discounted prices. A great way to enjoy a treat without the guilt (or the hefty price tag).
  • Free Museums and Galleries: A Cultural Feast: The British Museum, National Gallery, and many more offer free entry. Soak up some culture without spending a penny. Check out my other blog post of free activities to do in London.
  • Look up discounted travel options – A Student Oyster photocard provides reduced travel rates for eligible students over 18 in London. You can also get adult-rate Travelcards, Bus, and Tram passes at 30% off. Additionally, linking your Oyster card to a Railcard offers 30% off travel on National Rail Services, allowing for 34% savings on off-peak DLR and London Tube fares.
  • Phone deals: So when you take out a phone contract or pay as you go sim, many providers offer benefits. I love Three, as they give members a £1 coffee at Cafe Nero every week, £3 cinema tickets and other great benefits.
  • Lunch deals: Savvy locals know the secret to affordable lunchtime bliss- the glorious meal deal. This trifecta of lunchtime goodness – typically a sandwich, snack, and drink – is a staple for office workers, students, and anyone looking for a quick and cheap bite. Check out my other blog for more tips on the lunch deals at different supermarkets.
