London’s culinary scene is a vibrant tapestry woven with threads from across the globe, and the East and Southeast Asian influence is particularly strong, especially when it comes to delightful cafes and bakeries. From delicate Japanese pastries to aromatic Vietnamese coffee, these spots offer a comforting taste of home or an exciting adventure for your taste buds. Here are some of my absolute favourites.
Katsute: If you’re a matcha lover, prepare to be transported to matcha heaven! Katsute’s matcha crepe cake is a thing of legend – layers upon layers of delicate crepes infused with rich, earthy matcha, creating a symphony of textures and flavours. Beyond the crepe cake, their other matcha treats and Japanese-inspired drinks are equally divine. It’s the perfect spot for working, a date or just a little treat.
Pandera: A London-based Filipino Bakery specialising in baked goods, sandwiches and coffee. They offer a range of unique sandos and drinks, including their signature Corned Beef Hash Sando.
Kissa Wa Café: This Japanese-inspired cafe exudes a calming atmosphere, perfect for escaping the city bustle. Their menu features fusion Japanese food (Teriyaki Chicken Panini Toast) and excellent matcha lattes.
Bun House: While not strictly a cafe or bakery, Bun House deserves a mention for their incredible Cantonese steamed buns. These fluffy, cloud-like buns are filled with a variety of savory and sweet fillings, from char siu pork to custard. They’re perfect for a quick and satisfying meal or a tasty snack on the go.
Moko Made Cafe: This one is relatively new to the area but won my heart. Think authentic Green tea, coffee, homemade treats, Japanese food, and art.
Bake: So this one is definitely on my list, and is known for their taiyaki, soft-serve ice cream & other Japanese treats.
These cafes and bakeries offer more than just delicious food; they provide an experience. The ambiance, the attention to detail, and the warm hospitality all contribute to making these places special. Whether you’re seeking a quiet corner to enjoy a matcha latte, a place to catch up with friends over some fluffy buns, or a spot to discover new and exciting flavours, these East and Southeast Asian gems in London have something to offer everyone.
