London can be expensive but having travelling and lived abroad in multiple different countries, one thing I do appreciate about London, is how much you can do for free. Here are a few of my favourite freebies:
Museums and galleries
Many of London’s top museums and galleries are free to enter, including the British Museum, the National Gallery, and the Tate Modern. You can easily spend a whole day exploring these world-class institutions.
- British Museum: Home to an astounding collection of artifacts from around the world, including the Rosetta Stone and the Parthenon sculptures.
- National Gallery: Located in Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery houses a collection of Western European paintings from the 13th to the 19th centuries.
- Tate Modern: Housed in a former power station, the Tate Modern is one of the world’s leading modern and contemporary art galleries.
Parks and gardens
London is home to a number of beautiful parks and gardens, which are perfect for a relaxing stroll or picnic. Some of my favorites include Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, and Greenwich Park.
- Hyde Park: One of the largest Royal Parks in London, Hyde Park is home to the Serpentine Lake, Kensington Palace, and the Diana Memorial Fountain.
- Regent’s Park: This beautiful park is home to London Zoo, an open-air theatre, and a boating lake.
- Greenwich Park: Located in southeast London, Greenwich Park offers stunning views of the city skyline and the River Thames.
- London Canal: Take a leisurely stroll or bike ride along London’s canals and discover a different side to the city. The Regent’s Canal and the Grand Union Canal offer picturesque routes with charming towpaths, quirky houseboats, and plenty of pubs and cafes along the way.
Other activities
- Sky Garden: This free public garden offers stunning views of the city from the 35th floor of a skyscraper. You need to book a ticket in advance, but it’s definitely worth it for the views.
- City Farms: Escape the hustle and bustle and get back to nature at one of London’s many city farms. These are great places to interact with animals and learn about farming. Some popular options include Hackney City Farm, Kentish Town City Farm, and Vauxhall City Farm.
- Free lunchtime concert: London is a city with a rich musical heritage, and there are many opportunities to enjoy live music during your lunch break. Here are a few of the best places to catch a lunchtime concert in London. Check out my blog post dedicated to this!
- Free Comedy Night: The Camden Head in Camden offers free comedy nights with a mix of new and experienced comedians. It’s a great option for a casual night out with friends.
