Camden through a local’s eyes

Where to go and what to do in Camden

Camden is a vibrant and eclectic district in North London, known for its alternative culture, live music scene, and bustling markets. It’s a popular destination for tourists, but it’s also a great place to live and work. I spent my late teens and early 20s hanging out in Camden and worked for a year or so in the area. So here are my tips on how to enjoy the area from a local perspective.

Coffee Shops and Cafes

  • The Coffee Jar: This independent coffee shop has a relaxed atmosphere and serves up delicious coffee and pastries.
  • Luminary Bakery: More than just a cafe, Luminary Bakery is a social enterprise supporting women who have experienced social and economic disadvantage. Their cakes and pastries are not only delicious but also contribute to a good cause.
  • Hidden Coffee: True to its name, this cafe is tucked away inside Camden Road Overground station. It’s a surprisingly spacious spot with a lovely terrace for people-watching.
  • Pandera Bakery: A London-based Filipino Bakery specialising in baked goods, sandwiches and coffee. Their colourful and inviting space is perfect for a quick coffee and pastry or a leisurely brunch.

Pubs

  • For the Rock ‘n’ Roll Soul, check out The Hawley Arms. This is a proper Camden institution. Once a favourite haunt of Amy Winehouse, it still retains its rock ‘n’ roll edge with live music, a decent beer selection, and that classic pub atmosphere. Grab a pint and soak up the history.
  • For metal heads, check out The Black Heart. Tucked away down a side street, this is a haven for metalheads and alternative music lovers. With regular gigs and a dark, atmospheric interior, it’s the perfect place to escape the Camden crowds and embrace your inner rocker.
  • For a traditional pub, The Edinboro Castle. If you’re looking for a classic pub with a proper beer garden, look no further. This place has a great selection of beers on tap, a friendly atmosphere, and a spacious outdoor area that’s perfect for summer evenings.
  • A classic institution of Camden town, check out The Dublin Castle. This Irish pub is known for its live music, friendly atmosphere, and decent Guinness. It can get crowded, but it’s always a good time.
  • For classic Camden vibes, the Lock Tavern is a Camden mainstay, boasting a lively atmosphere and a popular roof terrace perfect for sunny afternoons. Known for its eclectic music events and laid-back vibe, it’s a favourite spot for locals.
