My favourite local bars and pubs in East London

East London is a treasure trove of quirky and cool pubs and bars, each with its own unique charm. Whether you’re after a traditional boozer, a trendy cocktail bar, or a craft beer haven, you’re sure to find something to suit your taste in this vibrant part of the city. Here’s a rundown of some of my absolute favourite pubs in London:

Traditional Pub Feel

  • Royal Oak: This Grade II listed pub is a true gem on Columbia Road. With its beautiful tiled exterior and unspoilt 1920s interior, it’s a step back in time. Enjoy a pint of Young’s and soak up the history.
  • The Chesham Arms: This classic pub is a true Hackney gem. Saved from developers by the local community, it boasts a friendly atmosphere, a great selection of beers, and a lovely beer garden. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxed pint and a chat with friends.
  • The Approach Tavern: A classic boozer with a friendly atmosphere and a wide range of beers on tap. They also do a mean pub quiz on Thursdays.

Modern Pub Feel

  • Birdcage: This Columbia Road favourite is a bit of an institution. It’s known for its lively atmosphere, eclectic decor, and excellent selection of cocktails. It’s the perfect place to start your night before hitting the nearby clubs and bars.
  • Bethnal Green Tavern: A proper East End pub with a Victorian vibe. This one’s perfect for a cosy pint by the fire in winter or a lazy afternoon in the beer garden come summer. They also do a cracking Sunday roast.
  • The Gun: This Well Street pub is a local favourite with its stylish yet traditional interior, a wide range of craft beers and cocktails, and a delicious food menu. Be sure to check out their roof terrace in the summer!

Pub on a park:

  • Royal Inn on the Park: Overlooking the beautiful Victoria Park, this pub is an idyllic spot for a sunny afternoon. Grab a table outside, soak up the views, and enjoy a refreshing pint of ale.
  • Pub on the Park: Right by London Fields and behind the station, this is a true East London hangout point, especially during the summer.

Craft Beer specialists

  • Mother Kelly’s: This place is a mecca for craft beer lovers. With an ever-rotating selection of taps and a fridge stocked with beers from around the world, you’re spoilt for choice. The knowledgeable staff are always happy to offer recommendations, and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed.
  • Hackney Church Brew Co: Another great spot for craft beer enthusiasts. This brewery and taproom has a relaxed, industrial vibe and a constantly changing selection of beers on tap.
  • The Five Points Brewery & Courtyard: This Hackney brewery boasts a spacious courtyard, perfect for enjoying their delicious, handcrafted beers on a sunny day. They also offer brewery tours if you’re interested in learning more about the brewing process.
  • CRATE Brewery: Canal side bar and pizzeria in Hackney Wick, East London. The restaurant serves up stone baked pizzas alongside a selection of craft beers.

Other cool local hangouts

  • Number 90 Bar & Kitchen: Located on the Regent’s Canal, this bar and restaurant offers stunning views and a relaxed atmosphere.
  • The Lord Napier Star: This recently revived pub in Hackney Wick is a must-visit for its vibrant atmosphere and impressive street art collection. It’s a great place to catch live music, enjoy a delicious Sunday roast, or simply soak up the local vibes.
