
London is a fantastic city, but sometimes you need a break from the hustle and bustle. Luckily, there are many beautiful day trip destinations within easy reach either by car, train or bus.
Historical and cultural gems
Cambridge: This historic university town is renowned for its stunning architecture, world-class museums, and idyllic riverbanks. Must-see and do: King’s College, Cambridge University Botanic Garden, Fitzwilliam Museum, go punting on the River Cam, drink at a traditional English pub (The Eagle or Anchor), eat a Chelsea Bun at Fitzbillie’s cafe and try some fudge at the The Fudge Kitchen.
Oxford: Another historic university town, Oxford offers beautiful architecture, world-class museums, and charming literary connections. Must-see and do: Christ Church College, Bodleian Library, Radcliffe Camera, Ashmolean Museum, go punting and if you have time visit Blenheim Palace.
Canterbury: a city steeped in history, beckons with its magnificent cathedral, charming cobbled streets, and captivating tales of pilgrims. Must-see and do: Canterbury Cathedral, explore the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, wander through the Westgate Gardens, delve into the city’s past at the Canterbury Tales Visitor Attraction, catch a performance at the Marlowe Theatre, and treat yourself to a traditional afternoon tea at Tiny Tim’s Tearoom.
Picturesque countryside and villages
The Cotswolds: This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a haven for nature lovers and history buffs alike. There are multiple walks and hikes you can do around this area, including visiting picturesque villages such as Bourton-on-the-Water, Chipping Campden, and Bibury. My favourite is Castle Combe which has been called ‘The Prettiest Village in England’.
Windsor: a royal town that offers a charming blend of historical grandeur and picturesque scenery. Must see and do: Explore its opulent State Apartments, St. George’s Chapel, witness the Changing of the Guard ceremony, stroll through the historic Windsor Great Park and take a boat trip down the River Thames.
Lewes: This historic market town is known for its picturesque streets, ancient buildings, and annual Bonfire Night celebrations. Must see and do: Lewes Castle, Anne of Cleves’ House and if you are feeling adventurous, a hike along the south downs.
Coastal Delights
Brighton: a vibrant seaside city just outside London. It pulsates with a unique energy, known for its fun night-life and having the closest beach to London. Must see and do: iconic Brighton Pier, explore the quirky shops and cafes that line The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion and relax on the pebbled beach.
- Train Travel: London’s extensive rail network makes it easy to reach these destinations. Consider using a rail pass for discounted travel. There are also discounts if you buy tickets in bulk (e.g. three or more).
- Car Rental: For more flexibility, renting a car can be a good option, especially for exploring the Cotswolds.
